Write Art Out works year round...

Here in San Antonio, Write Art Out runs a number of programs to advance creative writing and literacy in our communities empowering new writers to cultivate their craft and emboldening them to share their gifts with the public. Along with these programs, Write Art Out actively engages with other nonprofit organizations to aid them achieving their goals.

Our Programs and Events include:

The Blah Poetry Spot: Originally known as The Blah Blah Blah Poetry Spot, it was founded in January of 2011 as a collaborative between local poets and supporters of the performing arts in the greater San Antonio area. The open mic poetry event is held every first and third Wednesday of each month at Deco Pizzeria (1815 Fredericksburg rd). Sign up to read opens at 7:30, show begins at 8pm.

Southern Fried Poetry Slam 2018: The slam is a four day festival including readings, workshops, side slams and
a regional slam for teams and independent poets. In 2016, the festival was held in Greensboro, NC. and San Antonio's representing team won the bid to bring Southern Fried Poetry Festival to SATX. The festival is tentatively set for the Alamo City between the dates of June 12 and June 17, 2018. Write Art Out directors are working extensively with many local community members, poets, organizers, and businesses to make sure that Southern Fried 2018 is the best one yet.

Fresh Ink Youth Slam: Part of our mission as a nonprofit is to encourage the literary arts among the youth. Fresh Ink Youth Slam is a bi-monthly poetry slam (typically held from August to March) where young poets share their works and workshop alongside nationally recognized authors. Teams of young poets were sent to Brave New Voices-an international youth poetry festival-in Atlanta, GA and Washington DC. The youth writers are given a platform where they can be as uncensored and honest as they would like while also curating and refining their craft.

Workshops: Throughout the year, Write Art Out poets will host workshops for writers and performers of all skill sorts. We also employ a number of poets who workshop in the community for other nonprofit organizations, schools, and universities. Dates and the names of poets hosting workshops will be advertised, and any additional questions about workshop can be answered at info@writeartout.org.

Poet in Residence: Twice a year, Write Art Out selects a poet to fulfill a three-month residency through our organization. The Poet in Residence must compose, share, and develop new original work and performances during their tenure. The poet will be charged with creating four new works a month (twelve total for their three-month term) and will be required to make appearances at The Blah Poetry Spot’s Open Mics. The Poet in Residence will also provide a 1-hour workshop on the last week of their tenure. Before the end of their term, the poet may coordinate with Write Art Out's Community and Operations Director for a final showcase of works created during said term. At certain points of time, there will be an honorarium for the Poet in Residence. The honorarium’s availability will be public for each call of applications. The residency is only for poets who reside in the greater San Antonio area. Applications and information will be advertised at a later date.

The ‘Moy: In June of 2018 Write Art Out will be releasing the first issue of our new art magazine. Exclusively publishing local artists, The ‘Moy will be issued quarterly, both online and in print, and distributed around the downtown area. The team consists of Program Director Travis Snell along with Marketing Lead Damien Dennis and a rotating team of editors from various scenes around town. We will be hosting events and promotions Be on the lookout for updates and follow us on facebook or instagram.
